NICHCY offers brief, but detailed fact sheets on specific disabilities. Each fact sheet defines the disability, describes its characteristics, and offers tips for parents and teachers.

You can also access additional information by using the blue boxes to the right (see, for example, Related Information and OSEP Resources). These will list resources on the specific disability in print or video and disability organizations that can offer more information and assistance.

Note: The list below is in alphabetical order by disability, except that you'll find Other Health Impairment listed last. We've put OHI as the last in the list because there are numerous health-related disabilities that fall under that category, including diabetes and Tourette Syndrome. That's where you'll find these two disabilities discussed, as well as heart conditions, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, and sickle cell anemia.

Another note! If you're interested in learning more about a disability that isn't listed below, try our Search box at the top right of the page. Enter your disability term and check out the results. You won't find info on all disabilities, however, since there are so many. If you don't find what you're looking for, please contact us directly at nichcy@aed.org, and we'll connect you to resources as best we can, pulling from our library and extensive networks.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)

AD/HD is one of the disabilities specifically mentioned under the disability category of Other Health Impairment. This page will connect you to our stand-alone fact sheet on AD/HD, but you may also want to read the fact sheet on Other Health Impairment.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is one of the disabilities specifically mentioned under the disability category of Other Health Impairment. This page will connect you to resources on epilepsy, but you'll also want to read the fact sheet on Other Health Impairment.

Other Health Impairment

OHI is a disability category under IDEA that lists examples of health-related conditions that may qualify a child for special education. The conditions that are mentioned are: diabetes, epilepsyheart conditions, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, sickle cell anemia, and Tourette Syndrome. To learn more about any of these disabilities, as well as others not specifically mentioned in IDEA as an OHI, you'll want to read the OHI fact sheet.
