Autism Endorsements: State Approaches

Series:inForum Brief Policy Analysis
Author:
Müller, Eve
Publication Date:2005
Abstract:
In 1992, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) first introduced autism as a federal disability category and mandated that states provide annual counts of children so identified. Since that time, the number of students identified with autism has grown significantly (U.S. Department of Education, 1994, 2002). Several states have responded to IDEA and/or to the increase in numbers of students with autism by offering an autism endorsement. The purpose of this document is to describe their approaches to autism endorsement.
