Finding Help for Young Children with Disabilities (Birth-5)

Abstract:
This Parent Guide answers questions about accessing early intervention services for infants and toddlers (birth through 2 years), and includes information on how to identify programs within a state, and how to identify and access special education programs for preschoolers with disabilities (ages 3-5). Topics covered include services for rural, Native American, adoptive/foster, and military families and their young children with disabilities. This issue includes a brief overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a glossary of disability and special education terms, a list of helpful books, and a parent’s record-keeping worksheet. Resources and organizational contact information were updated in 2005. (The publication is also available in Spanish.)

Homeless and Special Education Administrative Collaboration: Recommendations

Abstract:

This policy forum proceedings document begins with an introduction to the unique challenges that administrators face as they support implementation of services for children with disabilities who are homeless. Findings from a virtual forum are presented in the areas of policy and practice issues and recommendations for change. Forum participants’ recommendations focus on developing policies and practices for:

  • expediting enrollment and provision of services; and
  • coordinating programs and services.

The numerous appendices contain additional reference, contact, process and policy information and sample forms.

This Brief Policy Analysis introduces the changes to the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) that have implications for implementation across state agencies. The focus of the document is on the implications for state interagency collaboration and training. It includes a concise research overview and five state experiences in planning and implementing the provisions for screening and referring abused and neglected children to early intervention services. States describe successes and challenges and recommendations are given based on their experiences.

NICHCY Connections...to Spanish Information on Disability Conditions

Two versions of the page are available: one in English, for those who do not speak Spanish but who are looking for materials to share with Spanish-speaking families, and one completely in Spanish, for non-English speakers.
