Steps to Prevent Bullying of Students with Special Needs

Once accepted as a “rite of passage”, bullying is now acknowledged as a major concern by schools across the U.S. Bullying can create a climate of fear and disrespect that can have a negative impact on school climate and school learning (NEA, 2003). In fact, an estimated 160,000 students miss school each day because of bullying. The U.S. Dept of Education describes bullying as “intentional, repeated, hurtful acts, words or other behaviors, such as name-calling, threatening and/or shunning acts, committed by one or more children against another.”  The materials at this link were developed by the Matrix Parent Network and Resource Center specifically to aid parents of children with disabilities to deal with the difficult subject of bullying.
