—Description of Building the Legacy

Title
Building the Legacy: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 2004.

Purpose
To provide authoritative information about, and training materials on, IDEA and its final Part B regulations.

Source
The Building the Legacy training curriculum is a product of the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities (NICHCY), produced at the request of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the U.S. Department of Education.

Organization of the Curriculum
The training curriculum has five overarching themes (A, B, C, D, and E), with multiple training modules beneath each theme (1, 2, 3, and so on). These themes are:
Additional themes are planned for the future, including those addressing early childhood, administration of IDEA, and monitoring and supervision.

Modules in the Curriculum
Using the five themes, Building the Legacy gives you 19 training modules on separate topics. These are listed below. Not all are available at this moment, but hopefully all will be available online by Fall 2007. Materials for each module include: a PowerPoint presentation for use in training, detailed background text and explanation for trainers, handouts for participants, and supplemental resources for trainers.
Availability of the Curriculum
Individual modules will become available online as they are finalized, most in the coming weeks, the remainder by Summer 2007. Want to know when new materials become available? Give us your email address, and we'll tell you. Sign up at:

Theme B: IDEA and General Education

There are six modules in Theme B, four of which are currently available--Modules 5, 6, 7, and 8. The last two will be coming by Fall-Winter 2007. The handouts for the four available modules are grouped in one package, because some of their handouts are the same. If you haven't downloaded any handouts for Theme B yet, then download all the handouts in PDF or as an accessible Word file (listed first below). If you have downloaded the handouts for Theme B already (e.g., when Modules 5 and 6 were initially released), you need to either download the full set of handouts again or, for your convenience, download just the handouts that go with Module 7 or Module 8 (the four options listed last):

Additional Materials: Quotes

NICHCY is also pleased to make available two slide shows of 25 quotes each for trainers to use as they see fit, such as before a training session while participants are coming into the room or during breaks. The quotes touch upon universal themes in our lives, such as children, families, the art of teaching, leadership, teamwork, love, and growth. The slides themselves feature vivid pictures of children, teachers, moms and dads, schools, and...well, you get the idea. We hope you (and your participants) enjoy viewing these slide shows of quotes as much as we enjoyed creating them.

To download the quote shows, right-click on the link and save the zipped file to your hard drive. Then double-click on the icon to extract the zip file. You launch the slide show (which is automated and will run by itself) by double-clicking on the PLAY.bat file within the folder itself.

Tips for Downloading the PowerPoint Presentation

  • RIGHT-click on the link for the ZIP folder of the slide show above.

  • Your friend the computer will give you a list of options. Pick: SAVE TARGET AS.

  • Your friend the computer will ask you where you'd like to save the slide show.

  • Navigate to the location of your choice--maybe your desktop, maybe a folder you've set up to store all the IDEA training modules.

  • There! You've downloaded the ZIP file of the PowerPoint presentation.

  • Instructions for Opening and Using the Zipped PowerPoint presentation

    www.nichcy.org/training/Instructions.doc (in Word)

The MOST important thing to know is:

In the slide show folder, double-click on the PLAY.bat file to launch and operate the slide show.

    —Future Modules—

    What's Next?
Hallelujah! Building the Legacy is now finished!

How so, you might wonder, when Modules 3 and 4 are not available? The news is that those two modules have been postponed, pending reauthorization of NCLB. The 17 modules listed on this page finish out the curriculum for now.

A CD with all of these materials will soon be released by NICHCY. We'll keep you posted on its availability.

    —Important Thanks You's—

This training curriculum would not be available without the support of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). Not only did OSEP request that NICHCY develop a training curriculum on IDEA 2004, it also has provided incredible guidance and legal review of all content. OSEP staff have written many of the modules, attorneys at the Office of General Counsel have exhaustively reviewed all written materials for consistency with the statute and its implementing Part B regulations, and logistical, technical, and fiscal support has been provided. NICHCY would like to express its deep appreciation for OSEP's dedication and commitment in making this product possible.
